SMTP Relay vs SMTP Server: Which One Can Send Cold Email?

Email Infrastructure
Built for cold emailCompare
Mailbox serverYes
Relay serviceNo

SMTP relays like SendGrid and SES are built for opted-in mail. Cold email needs real mailboxes on an SMTP server. Here is the difference and why it matters.

Both speak SMTP, and both will accept your email. Only one is built for cold outreach, and using the wrong one can get your account closed in a day.

What an SMTP relay is

A relay, such as SendGrid, Amazon SES, Mailgun or Postmark, accepts mail from your application and delivers it at high volume. It is designed for receipts, password resets and newsletters to people who opted in. There is no inbox: replies go elsewhere, and there is no mailbox to warm.

Most relay providers’ acceptable use policies prohibit unsolicited email. Cold outreach through them tends to end with a suspended account and a burned IP.

What an SMTP server with mailboxes is

A mailbox host gives each sender a real mailbox with SMTP to send and IMAP to receive. Replies land in the same mailbox, warmup can build its reputation, and your sequencer connects to it like any other account. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and cold email infrastructure providers all work this way.

Why cold email needs mailboxes

  • Replies are the point. Without an inbox you lose the conversation.
  • Reputation is per sender. Filters judge each mailbox and domain, and warmup builds that history.
  • Volume is spread. Many mailboxes sending 30 a day look like people. One relay sending 3,000 looks like a campaign.

Where the IP comes in

Mailbox servers still send from IPs, either shared across customers or dedicated to you. On a shared pool, another sender’s complaints can drag down your placement. On a dedicated IP, the history is yours. Read more in our dedicated IP guide.

How InfraOptimal fits

InfraOptimal is a mailbox server built for outreach. Every mailbox has SMTP and IMAP credentials, sends from a dedicated IP included in the price, and warms from day one. It costs $2.00 down to $1.00 a mailbox, billed monthly if you like, and works in any sequencer.

FAQ

Can I send cold email through SendGrid or Amazon SES?

Their policies generally prohibit unsolicited email, and accounts that do it are often suspended. Use real mailboxes on an outreach provider.

Is an SMTP server the same as a mailbox?

For cold email purposes, you want a server that hosts mailboxes with both SMTP for sending and IMAP for replies.

Do I need a dedicated IP on an SMTP server?

Not always, but it keeps your reputation separate from other customers. On InfraOptimal it is included.
